Girls unsafe and their dignity under threat in Bihar!

By Dheeraj Kumar

Patna: The gang rape of a girl and her mother in Bihar`s Gaya district has shamed the state yet again. The girl and her mother were raped after the rapists tied her father with a rope near Sondiha village under Konch police station area in the district in the night of last Wednesday. But this was not all. After the gang rape of mother and her daughter in Gaya district, yet another shocking incident happened on Saturday in Nalanda district, the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, where a 14 year old Dalit girl was raped by three youths.

The accused even shot a video of the rape victim and made the video viral on social media. Subsequently, an FIR was registered at Sarmera police station in this connection.

Earlier, in April, four youths, including a minor, were arrested in Jehanabad district for allegedly molesting a girl, after a video of the incident had gone viral on social media.

Nearly a month later, a girl was molested in Gaya district and the act was videotaped. Two videos of the incident had gone viral on social media.

The growing trend of outlaws filming their sexual violence but also of making video clippings viral on social media should be an eye opener for police authorities as it was not less than an open threat to them.

Going by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar`s consistent emphasis on women empowerment, it is an irony that safety and dignity of girls and women are under threat in the state. According to the latest data available at the website of Bihar Police, the number of rapes in the month of January was 74 and rose to 88 and 127 in February and March this year.

Nitish, who once had inspired confidence among women and won laurels for his several steps towards women empowerment is now facing flak from the Opposition for growing number of rapes, molestation and sexual exploitation in the state.

The Chief Minister and his subordinates defend themselves by taking the plea that crimes could not be completely stopped and claim no offender can escape the dragnet of the law. Well argued but apprehensions of some unseemly incidents keep haunting minds of girls and women once they step out from their houses.

The rising crime graph is also contrary to the claim of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar that imposition of prohibition in the state has improved law and order situation in the state.

Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejaswi Yadav holds Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directly responsible for deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Going satirical in his attack, Tejaswi told Nitish to awaken his conscience so that a hapless person does not find his wife and daughter being raped before him and a brother is not forced to watch rape of his sister”.

‘Nitish government has made Bihar a rapist state’, Tejaswi sharpened his attached on CM through his tweet on Sunday.

It is high time that the Bihar government acts tough on the rapists.
