Haridwar/Rishikesh: The 87-year-old indefatigable Ganga crusader and eminent environmental scientist Prof GD Agrawal aka Sanand Swami died of weakness and cardiac arrest at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh, today afternoon.
Only yesterday the Haridwar district authorities had lifted him from his ashram, Matri Sadan in Haridwar, and got him admitted to AIIMS after the Swami had refused intake of even water since the afternoon of 9th October after the expiry of the deadline that he had set for the government to meet his demand for a comprehensive Ganga legislation.

He was surviving just on water, lemon and honey since he launched his agitation on 22nd June this year. Earlier twice he had to be admitted to hosptial because of his failing health. Two days ago he had said he was willing to call off his agitation even if the government issued a notification ban illegal mining, and tree felling in the flood basin of river Ganga and stop work on under construction and proposed dams on Mandakini, Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Nandakini, Dhauliganga and Pindar rivers.
Only today morning the Swami had issued a hand written press release stating that following persuasion by the doctors, he had now given his consent that potassium be administered to him both orally and 500 ml/day Intra Venous.

In another press release from Varanasi, shared on the WhatsApp page of Ganga Bachao Andolan Haridwar group, Swami Sanand’s guru Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati demanded post mortem and said Sanand’s body should be handed over to the Banaras Hindu University. Saraswati also demanded a CBI inquiry into the circumstances that led to Sanand’s death and said the Ganga Agitation will not stop because of the death of the Swami.
