Bandhan Tod: An app to fight child marriage in Bihar

A new app, Bandhan Tod, has been launched to fight against child marriage that is rampant in Bihar.

This is an initiative backed by over 270 civil society organizations that are collectively known as Gender Alliance Bihar, and is supported by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The app will help create awareness on child marriage resistance as well as assist teenage girls to escape this practice with the help of an SOS button. On pressing the SOS button, the Gender Alliance monitoring cell and civil society organizations receive the details of the user and send it to the local officials for assistance.

Anyone can download the app from Google Play Store and register by entering details such as name, age, etc.

The head of UNFPA in the state, Nadeem Noor says “probably it is the first latest technology in the country to fight child marriage.”

Bihar‘s Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi launched an app on 18th September. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will launch a statewide campaign for Bandhan Tod app on 2nd October 2017, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.

It is expected that Bandhan Tod mobile app will complement the Bihar government’s campaign against child marriage.
